It Was 60 Years Ago Today...
Among my favorite photos ever is this one of The Beatles with the Dresner Family of North Miami Beach. Here's the story: The Beatles' second appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show was broadcast from the Hotel Deauville in Miami Beach on February 16, 1964. They fell in love with Miami where police sergeant Buddy Dresner, who had been assigned as their guide and protector, became their instant pal -- sort of like their dad. They enjoyed Buddy (and Miami) so much that they asked their manager, Brian Epstein, if they could extend their stay in Florida, Brian said yes, and Buddy began arranging activities for them over the next week. As their friendship deepened, Buddy won Father of the Year honors in perpetuity when he invited The Beatles over to his ranch-style house in a residential North Miami Beach neighborhood so they could enjoy what would be their first home-cooked American meal.
I love this shot because it shows The Beatles respected Buddy so much that they dressed up for the occasion. It's also apparent they were just happy to enjoy an evening away from screaming fans and spend time with an average American family as Buddy, the smiling patriarch, enjoys himself in the back right. Also shown are his wife and three very lucky children. ... See MoreSee Less
